Charles Benjamin “Ben” Riddle
Charles Benjamin “Ben” Riddle (right) was married to Hazel Hill. Uncle Ben served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and then entered the United States Army during WWII. He took part in the first day of the invasion of Europe on D-day at Normandy beach (Omaha Beach). He was in the Battle of the Bulge, one of the few survivors of his unit, where his feet froze. Ben Riddle was born in Claiborne County, Tennessee near New Tazewell Tennessee. Ben passed away in December 1978 in Toledo, Ohio.Ben’s father was Henry Ridley, “Riddley”, or “Riddle” and he became a widower in his first marriage; Ben was born from the second marriage to Margaret “Maggie” Jane Sturgill-Ridley. Henry Riddle was murdered in a grocery store in New Tazewell, Tennessee on February 4, 1928 in a dispute over a grocery store debt. Herman Wilmore threw a sick of stove wood at Henry and broke his neck. Ben’s widowed mother Maggie Riddle remarried a man named Chester Venable and she had two more girls; later she married Elisha Tolliver Miley. Some of the family stayed in New Tazewell, Tennessee, others moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, and several moved to Monroe, Michigan.
