To use plain text by default in TextEdit, go to TextEdit Preferences in the menu bar. On the New Document tab, select Plain Text in the Format section. You don’t even need to close the preference window to initiate the change. As soon as you click the Plain Text button, all new TextEdit windows will open in Plain Text Mode. I'm using the Publishing feature in Word for Mac 2011, specifically the 'Flow Trifold brochure'. As you can imagine it's a landscape document which when folded twice creates a small brochure. For the front page it has 3 large 'blocks' of green with some text boxes over the top. I can move the text boxes but not the green blocks.

This is significant because having set the document to A4, the blocks are still aligned as if it's US Letter size. If this was in PowerPoint I'd just 'Edit Master' in 'Themes' but can't find a similar function in Word. Help anyone?

TextEdit User Guide

You can use TextEdit to edit or display HTML documents as you’d see them in a browser (images may not appear), or in code-editing mode.

Note: By default, curly quotes and em dashes are substituted for straight quotes and hyphens when editing HTML as formatted text. (Code-editing mode uses straight quotes and hyphens.) To learn how to change this preference, see New Document options.

Create an HTML file

1. In the TextEdit app on your Mac, choose File > New, then choose Format > Make Plain Text.

2. Enter the HTML code.

3. Choose File > Save, type a name followed by the extension .html (for example, enter index.html), then click Save.

4. When prompted about the extension to use, click “Use .html.”

2. Click Options at the bottom of the TextEdit dialog, then select “Ignore rich text commands.”
